Musical Revelation

Welcome to Sacred Music, a site I’ve created to share with you some of the music I’ve composed and a little bit about the ‘how’ and ‘why’.

Most of my compositions are what I call a ‘Musical Transliteration’ of the ancient Hebrew and Greek scriptures. The fundamental starting point, the inspiration, and a lot of the material for my works are sourced directly from the alpha/numeric nature of the original languages. Other inspiration for my compositions come from the usual surface understanding of scripture, or if I’m doing a commission for someone, I’ll take key elements of that persons life and passions to create an orchestral expression.

I trust you will enjoy, or at least find interesting, the musical interpretations of scripture I’ve managed to compose to date. I trust, in some way, that my music will unlock some inspiration and even revelation within your own spirit as you listen.

Commissions: If you are interested in commissioning me to compose a work I offer two types of commissions. Firstly a ‘Gift Package’ to bless someone with a unique composition composed just for them, based on something personal like a favourite poem, scripture, experience or passion. Secondly I offer commercial commissions intended for live performance or multimedia use.

Translating ancient words

For me there is something mysterious and intriguing about the ancient manuscripts that have been compiled into what we know as the Bible today. This God inspired logos is not just a history book, not just information about the nature of God, man and angels. These manuscripts, and especially the Torah, seem to be full of mathematical complexities and revelations far beyond the surface meaning of the text. with the invention of the computer, some of these mysteries are being explored, taking the study of gematria and code matrix to new levels of sophistication.

I am no Hebrew or Greek scholar – I know how to read a Hebrew/English transliteration, but that’s about it. But I have read enough of those who truly know Biblical Hebrew and Greek to realize there is a depth to be explored that more real and exciting than the Da Vinci Code!

My little adventure, in the great scheme of things, is to unlock some musical potential from the ancient Hebrew and Greek texts. And in so doing, find some inspiration and even revelation beyond the surface meaning of the scriptures.

The Scriptures have been talking to, quite obviously, the theologians. The scriptures have also been talking to the mathematicians, physicists, geologists, and astronomers, as well as musicians, poets and dreamers. As a composer the scriptures are talking to me about colour, texture, movement, emotion and how to articulate these things in a musical language we can relate to. If I can draw from the fundamentals of the text a musical expression that is a catalyst for deeper spiritual insight, then I have done my ‘job’ in unlocking something of value that had been hidden from you.

Who I Am

Iam Matthew Dahlitz, an Australian composer living in Logan City, Queensland, who’s passionate about God and music. Back in the early 1990′s I studied at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, firstly in music technology, and later in composition. It was at the conservatorium that I studied orchestral compositional techniques with a particular interest in the romantic composers and film music. It was the beginning of sequencing and MIDI, all of which I had a fascination and has provided a basis for my compositional methods today.

Now in my 40′s I still have an interest in the big sounds of Hollywood scores and the great romantic composers of the past. My greater interest, however, is in using modern orchestral techniques and other contemporary sounds, to bring out what I believe are hidden mysteries within the scriptures. Using the techniques explained on this site, my desire is to compose music that not only sounds good but is actually coming from a deeper well than my own imagination. When I was studying film music, I was learning how to accompany something bigger than the music itself – the picture and dialogue. In a way I’m doing the same sort of thing, but my music is like a soundtrack to God’s Word.

I hope you enjoy my music.

bringing gems to the surface

I dig into the original language of the scriptures to uncover gems of revelation. Unlike a theologian, a preacher or teacher of the Bible, I declare the riches of what I uncover through music. There are deeper levels of meaning in the scriptures below the surface text. These hidden messages from God are waiting to be uncovered by ones hungry and brave enough to go treasure hunting. With the fresh breath of the Holy Spirit you will be amazed at what is being discovered in the complex matrix of God’s Word. I’m part of a breed who are captivated by the thought of uncovering these mysteries – mysteries hidden since the beginning of time.

What I’m doing here is just one big adventure of discovery. It’s not an attempt to produce commercial music, to make a name, or to satisfy a mass audience. It’s to reveal the heart of my heavenly Father to those who have an ear to hear.
