What You Need To Know To Set Up Your YouTube Channel For Business

1. Create a Google Account

To get started on creating you YouTube channel you must first have a Google account. If you are doing this for business then create a separate account for your business (or use an existing one from a personal account). Creating a new account is ideal if you are worried about security issues that may affect your personal account. YouTube also gives you the option of using a business name, which I would highly recommend, or just your personal one if you are a sole owner.

Next, make your way to YouTube’s homepage and sign-in

2. Signing-In

Log in to YouTube by clicking on the avatar icon (top left corner) and once logged in select “My Channel” from the drop-down list.

Then a screen will prompt you to enter your first and last name. As mentioned earlier, you have the option to use a business or product name for your channel.

Either create the channel as a personal brand with your name or a product or business name if you are doing a dedicated business account.

And voila!

3. Customizing your channel

Click on “Customize Channel.” It’s important that you channel looks as professional as possible and this starts with creating a channel icon and a banner that communicates to your audience exactly what your content and brand is about. You will need 2 images and the dimensions for YouTube images are as follows:

  • Channel icon: recommended as 800×800 pixels, displays as 98×98 pixels
  • Channel banner: 2,560×1440 pixels, safe area for mobile and web (without text and logo cropping) is 1546 x 423 pixels.

The dimensions are quite large so start with hi-resolution images. Free resources like Canva (or any other image editing software at your disposal) would be helpful in crafting imagery for your channel in a flash. Make sure you have the rights to the images you use and you are not just grabbing any image off the web.

When changing your icon for the first time a prompt will appear before you can upload a new image into your Google account.

Uploading a channel art has a similar straight-forward upload button as well

Play around with images and colors to get the right “feel” for your channel – remember that first impressions are very important and what viewers see on the banner and icon images will immediately speak volumes to them before they have looked at 1 second of video.

4. What The Channel Is About

You will need to give a concise and meaningful description of your business or personal brand so people who are interested can know, very quickly who you are and what you do. Refrain from adding unnecessary “key words” that would make your description too “busy”  but instead let your audience know what your purpose for creating the channel is about as well as any related projects you have outside of YouTube. This is the sort of short description you should have on other social media channels and on your website – make it consistent across the board.

Make use of this section to point the audience to your website homepage (or wherever you do your main business) to promote your brand further. Here you can also include a business email as a point of contact to let followers know how to reach you.

One of the most important section of your channel is where you add links to your other social media platforms, to both drive traffic to your business and increase your following by allowing subscribers to share your content with other people with similar interests. YouTube allows you to add up to 5 links and customize-able hyperlink text up to 30 characters

5. Featured Channels

This section is helpful if  you are not making content for your channel all the time but you want to give the subtle appearance of being active nonetheless. Selecting channels to feature also lets you get involved with other YouTube communities and may even introduce you to social media influencers in the industry that can do the same for you.

Have your subscriptions and “liked” videos set to public so viewers can access them, and keep things strictly professional – no “liking” the latest viral video or making personal comments on the latest political video as your professional channel.

Select the “Add Section” on the account’s menu to quickly add the “liked” videos and subscriptions on your YouTube channel.

6. Adding A Channel Trailer

A trailer is a video that shows and plays in a top and prominent position and is a good way to let visitors, first-time viewers and non-subscribers have an idea of what to expect from your channel. This serves as a support to your “About” page and is ideally less than a minute long. Free tools like Clip Champ would be helpful but you can use any video editing too you have for this. Once your trailer is created sign-in to your YouTube account.

  1. Click on the avatar icon on the upper right corner of your page and select “My Channel” on drop-down menu.
  2. Under your channel’s banner, click the Customize Channel button
  3. Click on the cog wheel icon to access the settings.  
  4. Toggle the “Customize the layout of your channel” to On and click save.
  5. Go to the channel you want to manage. 
  6. Click “For New Visitors” 
  7. Click the “Channel Trailer” button and select the trailer you created before clicking save. 

7. Optimizing each video

Optimizing your YouTube Channel is another important step in keeping your audience interested and perhaps the most tedious one because it’s an ongoing process. As outlined in the YouTube optimization guide there are some key points to remember:

  • Keywords used in the video title and description
  • Creating transcripts and custom captions that make the videos easier to crawl for YouTube
  • Make unique thumbnail images that make it more eye-catching for potential viewers
  • Include proper tags so your videos show up in relevant search queries

Creating a YouTube channel may seem like a lot of work at first but once you get understand the basics and remember the important key points, optimizing your channel becomes easier.
